The Osage Indians had hunting grounds in northwest Arkansas long before the first white man appeared.

Frank Pierce came to the White River for the first time in 1819. He was so impressed with the area that he returned later in 1828, and settled near the tree where he had spent the night 9 years earlier, becoming the first white man to do so.

Washington County was officially formed on October 17, 1828. Fayetteville was chosen to serve as its county seat. Northwest Arkansas played a major role in the Civil War, with several battles fought in the area. Of particular note are the battles of Fayetteville, Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove. Fayetteville has a large historic district with some homes dating back to this era.
